watching something frozen in time, full of amber and anger. it may be the first time clinton picked up seats, obama may be on the way to that. this may be good for democrats in return. it is not good for the country to be so frozen and reflexively anti-obama. >> steve kornacki, and ari melber. >>> coming up, steve colbert's sister is running for congress in south carolina. and in the rewrite tonight, the most memorable, quotable state-of-the-union address in history. and just how it affected me. that is coming up. at tyco integrated security, we consider ourselves business optimizers. how? by building custom security solutions that integrate video, access control, fire and intrusion protection. all backed up with world-class monitoring centers, thousands of qualified technicians, and a personal passion to help protect your business. when your business is optimized like that, there's no stopping you. we are tyco integrated security. and we are sharper. to prove febreze can keep this car fresh, we loaded it with fast food, sweaty hockey gear, and a smelly dog cage. and parked it at a mal

with libyan government officials in the attack. white house official wrote, "secretary clinton called libyan president el-megarif on behalf of the president on the evening of september 11, 2012, to coordinate support to protect americans in libya and access to libyan territory." that angered graham. >> the president of the united states did not make any phone calls to any government official. and libya, the entire period of the attack. he called government officials on september 12, after everybody was dead. >> we would not have gotten answers but for pushing for this. frankly, the more answers we have gotten i think we have shown here that this was a national security failure. >> late today, president obama said chuck hagel is imminently qualified to be secretary of defense. the president says he deserves a vote and predicted eventually he will get confirmed. >> bret: mikes, thanks. we just got word from the pentagon that panetta is heading to california tonight, to monterrey. the ride is also getting bumpy for the president's choice as top spy master. the complication and confusion continu

in charge with the people on the ground. >> would you say secretary clinton in charge. >> pardon me? >> was secretary clinton in charge. >> the people in charge, were the ambassador there at benghazi. >> no. but, they can't, you know, they were trying to save their lives. rick: richard grenell, a former spokesperson for the last four u.s. ambassadors to the u.n. byron york, is chief political correspondent at the "washington examiner". gentlemen, good to see you both. rick, you first. you worked at a number of administrations. odd that the president himself would be so hands off while one of our consulates was under attack? >> yeah, very odd. i think it's, mitt romney was right. it really was a weak response from the president. he was off in vegas at a fund-raiser. the simple fact is, they took a couple pictures in the oval office where secretary panetta was briefing the president. but the president was hands off. the other thing we learned, secretary clinton was hand off. these employees that were under attack were state department employees. where was secretary clinton? she didn't

's welcome back president bush had it his second term. president clinton below. how do you have him handle the rest? >> he will do what he has been doing. you use the word "confrontational." i would use a different word. they will be very familiar themes. the economy will be central and how we can grow it. so everybody can participate. fair shot, pay your fair share but other things that he does lay out, he'll lay out the looming deadline on the sequester and tough choices we have to make around it and consequences if we let the sequester go into effect and, you know, cuts to some pretty critical programs, so i think the state of the union is always an important moment in a presidency, not just another case for the people sitting in the room but the country of the tough choices we have to make and i think he'll make it. >> nicolle, a cautionary tale on the state of the union. >> i think that he made the proposal to reform social security without having his own party on board. that's a lesson for any president, but i think president obama did the republican party a huge favor by delivering

the recommendation by secretary of state, then secretary of state clinton, and then head of cia general petraeus that we provide weapons to the resistance in syria. >> we did. >> you did support that? >> we did. >> reporter: that's the first time that i've heard that the defense department and military officials say that they had recommended arming syrian rebels. you'll remember over the weekend that "the new york times" reported that last summer petraeus and clinton approached the white house for permission to arm the rebels. "the new york times" says that the white house rejected that request. however, there have been some implications from questions from senators on the hill as to whether in fact what was going on in benghazi was that there was some sort of operation to repackage arms, send them through turkey to syrian rebels. this is what was the basis of the question by senator rand paul to hillary clinton during the benghazi hearings last week. here is what they said. >> now my question is, is the u.s. involved with any procuring of weapons, transfer of weapons, buying, selling, anyhow tr

the night of september 11th and when secretary clinton said she had a clear eyed view of the threats we faced in libya, the secretary of defense and chairman of the joint chiefs said they knew that night it was a terrorist attack and knew of the reporting coming out of libya from ambassador stevens says we cannot defend the consulate. she was not clear eyed. she was blind and deaf and the president of the united states never picked up the phone to call anybody in libya to help these four people under attack. the first ambassador killed in 30 years. they withheld information. i think they manipulated the evidence after the attack to create a political narrative rather than sharing with the public the truth about an al-qaeda attack that was preplanned and precoordinated. we will get to the bottom of this. >> chris: let me ask you one more question about the sequester before we let you go, senator. you know if we go into the sequester the president is going to hammer republicans. the white house has already put out a list of the terrible things that are going to happen if a sequester kicks

pollster for president bill clinton. pat, what did you think? >> he was better than hagel in the hearing. >>gregg: that is not saying much. >> he got caught up in the drone stuff and making incredible statements. what came out because the same day he testified we had outgoing secretary of defense panetta, went to testify on benghazi and told us what we learned. two weeks ago, we talked last week about the difference between what panetta and clinton said about iran versus hagel, and two weeks ago when they went on "60 minutes" we called it the biggest pay off in history. in that show, i remember suggesting one of the reasons that came out of hillary clinton's testimony was interesting to pursue, what was the president doing? we now know the president wasn't engaged. they had a 5:15 minute meeting that was preplanned and he did not talk to secretary of defense, clinton, and according to panetta, talked to no one. what we have a foreign policy that is coming apart. >>gregg: you were in the carter administration. all hands on deck the. >> the president himself, for ten, 15, 20 hours a day, i

the president and secretary of state clinton know about a cable from ambassador chris steves warning the danconsulate, quote, could sustain an assault. he strongly believes that the obama administration simply did not support the fragile libyan government enough in the early days. that led to a fragile security situation that he believes that, at the end of the day, contributed to this attack. >> as you know, getting the answers to these questions, part of the issue's involved chuck hagel. by now, there was supposed to be a new defense secretary. leon panetta was supposed to be already back in california. but all that is set back. what's the latest? what's going on with panetta? he's staying put, i take it, for the time being? >> reporter: he is staying in office and running the pentagon till hagel is confirmed. but not necessarily running the pentagon from right here. he went back to his california home over the weekend. he will travel this week to brussels for a nato summit. hagel was supposed to go to that summit. and then the big question is, after that, somewhere in the saturday
